External monitors: the right size is the one that fits your desk and work

Screen area, connection compatibility and stand adjustment help determine whether a display improves the working day.

The everyday case

An external monitor can make a desk more comfortable to organise, but a larger panel is not automatically a better fit. Your viewing distance, application layout and desk depth should lead the choice.

What matters before you buy

Check resolution, scaling behaviour and the inputs available on both the monitor and computer. A USB-C connector does not by itself guarantee every charging, video or data feature you might expect. Confirm the cable requirements for the exact setup and whether a docking function is actually included.

Living with it

Consider stand height and adjustment before assuming an aftermarket arm is required. If you use an arm, verify the mounting standard, weight support and desk attachment. Clean the panel using the maker’s method rather than a general household spray. Keep the screen position adjustable as your work changes.

One wide screen can offer a continuous workspace; two separate screens allow different positioning and application separation. The better arrangement depends on the tasks and the available depth, not a universal preference for more panels.
